No you can't go... You're GROUNDED!!!

When you have run out of options it is very tempting to use Scouts as a diciplinary tool to control your son. Yes, many kids do make poor choices about behavior and doing homework. And we are fully aware of the challenges a parent faces when trying to control their children in these situations.

But please keep in mind that Scouting is an important influence on their lives, and not something that should be taken away as a punishment for bad grades or behavior. We are here to help when we can, but grounding your son from Scouts may have harmful side effects.

While we do have some activities that are 100% fun, we also have many events and meetings that would severely hurt advancement opportunities by pulling your son from the event. This is especially true when they are newer and under the rank of 1st Class.

Please consider the following suggestions when grounding your son from Scouting:

  • Weekly meetings Please allow your son to come but make it clear he must sit out during the game. Bring your son in and speak to a leader that will be attending the entire meeting so we understand why he needs to not participate. Or even better yet, stick around yourself!

  • Weekend Campouts The patrol is graded on participation. Evaluate the kind of campout it is and discuss the event with a leader to find out how what kinds of learning activities your son may be missing.

  • Summer Camp is the most important activity of the year. It is critical that every Scout attends. When someone misses a year at camp it will severely impact his ability to 'keep up' his advancement with the other Scouts his same age! In addition it can eliminate him from becoming an OA member the following year. Summer Camp gives the boys a week of non-stop Scouting experiences. They will get to fellowship with hundreds of other Scouts, work on Merit Badges, swim, hike, shoot, boat, skits, campfires and build upon the Scout Oath and Law. They will make fond memories that will last a lifetime! If you are REALLY struggling with a need to punish your son, perhaps he could miss all the "Free Swims"

  • Fun Events We do have some events that are just fun only. These might include rock climbing, a hike or summer swimming. These events would be fine to use as a punishment for behavior issues or poor grades.

Remember that part of growing up includes learning responsibility. This includes being part of a Patrol or especially if you are a junior leader to the Troop!
